Plan ahead for Sept. 9-16: A drive-up concert, jazz in the park, a virtual 5K – Florida Today

It’s all about the fan faves when Space Coast Symphony presents “Fan Favorites Redux,” the next in its series of drive-up concerts.

The performances, scheduled for 7 pm., Friday, Sept. 11, in Vero Beach, and Saturday, Sept. 12, in Viera, distills audience favorites from 11 seasons.

“We have a list 11 seasons long of favorites the audience would love to hear,” said conductor and artistic director Aaron Collins. “We’ve tried hard to satisfy as many requests as possible with this really diverse program of great music.”

The program, which features works by Gershwin, Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Rossini, Beethoven and more, also showcases the talents of Andrew Cleaver, who will provide the comic play-by-play narration during the PDQ Bach version of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, and of principal trombonist Alex Regazzi, featured soloist in “Blue Bells of Scotland.”

For the drive-in concerts, musicians perform safely distanced from each other, while concert attendees are invited to set up their own seating next to their vehicles. Concertgoers may also remain in their cars and tune their radios to a live feed of the music.

The Symphony will perform out of doors through December, with hopes of returning to the concert hall in the very early months of 2021

Through the end of the year, all Treasure Coast drive-up concerts will be performed at Pathway Church, 1105 58th Avenue in Vero Beach; Space Coast drive-up concerts will be take place at the east end of The Avenue Viera, 2261 Town Center Avenue in Melbourne.   

Tickets are $10 per person or $25 per carful of adults. Purchase at SpaceCoastSymphony.org or in-person at Marine Bank & Trust branches in Vero Beach and Suntree. Jazz in the Park

Jazz in the Park returns to The Avenue Viera when the Chief Cherry Quintet do their thing Sunday, Sept. 13, in Central Park. The free series, which runs from Sept. 13 to Oct. 11, features five jazz ensembles with a variety of styles from 11 to 2 p.m. on Sundays. The lineup the Melbourne Municipal Band on Sept. 20, The Jazzcats Quintet on Sept. 27, Swing Boutique for Oct. 4 and Chief Cherry and His Red Beans and Rice on Oct. 11.  

Bring a chair and enjoy the show, but remember to maintain social distancing.  

Dance, dance, dance

The 10-piece Harbor City Dance Band will perform at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Italian American Club, 1471 Cypress Ave., Melbourne.

Desserts and cocktails will be available. Tickets are $7 and include one drink.

At 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, the Club will host Jukebox Jam, a dance to the tunes of the digital juke box.

$10 tickets include pizza, cocktails and all the dancing you care to do.

The Italian American Club is hosting beginner Italian lessons starting at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 16. Classes run from 6 to 8 p.m. Forty classes are $50 and includes a year’s membership to the Club.

The club also invites the public to come watch football at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 14, on its giant television screen. The event is free. Bingo will be hosted there at 1 p.m on Tuesday, Sept. 15, with free snacks, cake and coffee.

A new kind of drive-in

Walmart and Palm Bay Parks and Recreation have joined forces to host a new kind of drive-in, with “Movies in the Park” at Veterans Memorial Park, 2201 Port Malabar Blvd. NE.

Parking opens at 6:45 p.m. for the 7:45 show, which is”Captain Marvel,” on Friday, Sept. 11.

A 5k Your Way

The City of Palm Bay welcomes runners and walkers to its “Florida Summer Fun Run/Walk Virtual 5k, which runs through Sept. 22.

Sign up at playonline.palmbayflorida.org, run or walk and send in your times. Participants receive a t-shirt, certificate and will have their times posted on the website. Registration is $20 if you wish the shirt mailed to you, or $15 if you pick it up.
