The Joffrey Ballet School Jazz & Contemporary Summer Intensive 2019 is proud to present SPECTRUM, the culmination of another successful summer of dance in New York City. Nicholas Payton – Blue Note

Since 1994 when Nicholas Payton made his recording debut as a leader with “From This Moment,” the trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer has been lauded as one of the leading voices in jazz. Even though he started out as a “young lion,” one of the new generation guardians of the swing and bebop flames, the 45-year-old Payton has devoted himself to discovering sounds outside of strict traditional confines. Having grown up in a family and community of musicians in New Orleans, Payton has built his unique voice by melding a post-bop foundation, a heavy emphasis on groove, a soulful history, and various experimental elements. In addition to collaborating with an eclectic group of contemporary artists — Trey Anastasio, Ray Charles, Daniel Lanois, Dr. John, Jill Scott, and Allen Toussaint, among them — Payton is credited on over 120 recordings and had his music featured in film and television productions including Robert Altman’s “Kansas City,” HBO’s “Treme,” and “The Americans” on FX. Kat Riggins was born Katriva Riggins in Miami, Florida on February 7, 1980. She grew up in a household where there was always background music. Because of the wide range of genres in her parents collection, Kat developed a love for all types of music from gospel and soul to country and rock and everything in between. “I can remember being in the car with my mom and sister singing along to Tracy Chapman one minute and Chuck Berry the next”, says Kat. However, even then, she was drawn to the smokey gritty sounds of artists like Bessie Smith,Sam Cooke, Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Denise LaSalle, Etta James, Ray Charles, Koko Taylor,Janis Joplin and the list goes on. She grew up singing in local programs, church events, and family gatherings with her sister and cousins. At age 23 Kat landed a gig singing jazz and blues standards in a small lounge in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida with the accompaniment of only a piano player.

However, even then, she was drawn to the smokey gritty sounds of artists like Bessie Smith,Sam Cooke, Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Denise LaSalle, Etta James, Ray Charles, Koko Taylor,Janis Joplin and the list goes on. The DW Jazz Orchestra is an 18-piece big band led by saxophonist Louis Danowsky and trumpeter Sam Wolski, two 22-year old graduates from Northwestern University’s Jazz Studies program. Inspired by bands led by Count Basie, Thad Jones, and Christian McBride among others, the band formed as an outlet for the duo’s compositions and arrangements in 2016. They released their debut album, Coalescence, in May 2017, featuring the original works and arrangements of Danowsky and Wolski. The ensemble has since performed several times in New York and Chicago, including a debut at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, where they recorded their second album, Live At Dizzy’s, released in December 2018. The ensemble has featured some of the brightest young jazz musicians and professionals from New York, including Benny Benack III, Julian Lee, and Julius Rodriguez. Mackenzie Leighton was raised in a small town in Maine in the United States and has been playing music and singing since she was 4 years old. She started with classical piano and eventually transitioned to jazz, followed by forays with the flute, the trumpet, and the guitar. After studying in New York City and playing music with two different bands, she moved to Paris and released her self-titled debut EP in December 2017. She has played numerous concerts in Paris and went on to play her first solo tour in Italy in October 2018. Her style has been compared to that of Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker, and Australian media Savage Thrills notes that “Mackenzie Leighton is what Indie Folk music has been waiting for, for decades. Listening to her music is a shelter.”

Since 1994 when Nicholas Payton made his recording debut as a leader with “From This Moment,” the trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer has been lauded as one of the leading voices in jazz. Even though he started out as a “young lion,” one of the new generation guardians of the swing and bebop flames, the 45-year-old Payton has devoted himself to discovering sounds outside of strict traditional confines. Having grown up in a family and community of musicians in New Orleans, Payton has built his unique voice by melding a post-bop foundation, a heavy emphasis on groove, a soulful history, and various experimental elements. In addition to collaborating with an eclectic group of contemporary artists — Trey Anastasio, Ray Charles, Daniel Lanois, Dr. John, Jill Scott, and Allen Toussaint, among them — Payton is credited on over 120 recordings and had his music featured in film and television productions including Robert Altman’s “Kansas City,” HBO’s “Treme,” and “The Americans” on FX. After recording for Verve, Warner Brothers, and Nonesuch, Payton now records for his own imprint, Paytone Records
